Say Hello to Oreo

Say Hello to Oreo

Crawford Childcare adopted a fallabella horse in the latter half of 2013 and named him Oreo. He lives at Tir na Sí Open Farm in Watergrasshill where Julia and Paul McCarthy look after him on our behalf. Each morning and evening they feed Oreo and clean out his stable. We appreciate their work very much.

On the farm Oreo's friends include pigs, sheep, horses and alpacas to mention but a few. Also the many parents and children that visit the farm stop by to chat to Oreo. He does love the attention he receives from everyone.

Oreo is fifteen years old, this was confirmed by a blacksmith. This is done by looking at his teeth, taking into account a number of factors such as the condition, shape, angle of the teeth and also by looking at the gum line.

The Falabella miniature horse is the smallest and lightest breed of horse in the world.  These horses was bred by the Fallabella family in Argentina.  Average breed heights for a fully-grown Falabella today are between 28 and 34 inches.  Foals are between 12 and 22 inchs at birth. Fallabellas can live for about 40 years. Plenty of years ahead for Oreo then.  They are considered easy to train intelligent and were very popular as a pet in recent years.
The Montessori class will visit Oreo later on in the year where they will be given to opportunity to chat, feed and even brush him.

If ever you find ourselves walking around the farm, make sure to say hello to Oreo and tell him all your news from Crawford Childcare, Glanmire, Cork.
