Adventure Room Some of the children knew last week that Friday was St. Patricks day and they really enjoyed the arts and crafts. We provided a big piece of paper, glue, blue and yellow paint, glitter, shamrocks and cotton. Some children sticked on shamrocks while others stamped their fingers and hands on it. Other used the cotton to spread our the green glitter. We created a nice St. Patricks day mural which we put up on the wall. Some parents were delighted to hear their children were involved in the mural. Discover Room During circle time last week St. Patricks’ day came up in conversation…
Exploring Room Our babies have discovered the sand box! A few weeks ago we placed it on a shelf in the library with a lid on. It didn’t take long to be explored, when one afternoon Caoimhe was playing with her sister Roisin and she came across the box. She pulled it off the lower shelf onto the floor. As the lid was on it she tried to figure out want was inside, carefully investigating the box. A few moments later she managed to get the lid off and was so excited to see all the sand inside. Upon hearing her excited squeals Roisin and…
We had a particularly wet Monday recently here at Crawford Childcare. The rain was very heavy and didn’t stop for a moment. We don’t usually shy away when there’s a bit of rain here but under such extreme weather conditions we think it is better for the children to enjoy summer camp indoors. There is no way rain is stopping play however. We gathered some boxes and asked the children what they would like to make. Perhaps inspired by all the wet weather they decided on an aquarium. All the children joined in to help paint the box. Lily said “we need to paint the…
Here at Crawford Childcare , part of our philosophy is to help children to learn to socialise and communicate with both adults and their peers. Children learn many of their social skills through play. At Crawford Childcare, Glanmire the children play outdoors as often as possible and they especially enjoy water and sand play. Here is an insight into one of our Toddler teams observations. We hope you enjoy it! James decided to play at the water table. He knows that he must wear a protective apron when playing with water and asked an adult to help him. He happily played by himself with the…
Tuesday 14th October 2014 A second day at Queen Maud University College (QMUC) campus today. Something that strikes me is how children are invited and welcomed into this adult setting. Of course it makes sense that people training to become early years teachers need to be around children. Common sense is common in Norway! We had several lectures today including: - Lecture on physically active play in Kindergarten - Lecture on children with special needs in Norwegian day cares - Lecture on mentoring new teachers - a state funded national development programme. There was a lot of information much of which I am still…
The weather has been a bit wintery and we have even enjoyed going out in the odd flurry of snow. This was great for the Montessori’s theme of the Winter Olympics last week. We tried our hand at our own versions of tobogganing, bob sleighing, skiing and ice skating – check out our latest learning story on this in reception. We also explored the Olympic rings and each made a spectacular torch craft which we run home with. However Spring has definitely sprung in our crèche in Glanmire. The babies and the toddlers have been working on spring tree displays for their rooms complete with…
Traditionally young children in Ireland were cared for in the family home and went to school after the age of 3. Today childcare services not in the child’s home are a necessity for many. There has been a lot of debate over how to describe the different types of childcare services available for children aged 0 to 6 years. Until recently Irish policy made a distinction between childcare and education. However Hayes (2007) explains “the inseparable nature of education and care in early years provision across all settings and highlights the caring nature of education and the educative nature of care.” The social nature of…
Painting is an important part of the curriculum in all 3 rooms in Crawford Childcare. Painting offers many learning opportunities including sensorial play, creativity, mark making, recording information, communication, literacy and numeracy skills. Brushes and paints are popular of course. The team at Crawford Childcare also like to introduce more creative painting ideas to the children in each room. We thought we would share a few in this week’s blog so that the more adventurous amongst you can try them too. Just remember to dress the children (and yourself) in clothes you are not too worried about. It is also a good idea to have…
Crawford Childcare & Montessori is fortunate to be located in the leafy suburbs of Glanmire in Crawford Woods. Our purpose built facility was built to suit the needs of children from 3 months to 6 years. Our large car park takes the stress out of those early morning drop offs and we have space to accommodate buggies and car seats in the entrance all. We take security very seriously so the car park, entrance and garden are monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. A keypad system is in operation on all access doors within the crèche whereby only holders of the code can enter…
