Crawford’s Bug Hotels

Crawford’s Bug Hotels All the children at Crawford Childcare have been very busy the last few weeks planning and building our very own bug hotels. Our Bug Hotel’s will provide warm and friendly accommodation for a wide variety of tiny beasties in their natural environment all year round. Each room was set a task to plan and create their very own bug hotel and first prize went to the hotel that checked in the most guests on judging day. Throughout the week the children gathered various materials such as boxes, bottles, flower pots, straw, pipes, wood, earth, shells, twigs and leaves to build and design our very own…

Summer time in Crawford

Summer time in Crawford Sunday 21st June 2015 was our longest day of the year and reminds us all that summer is well under way. There is a lot of talk of holidays around the crèche. Some children are already coming back with their tales of their breaks to France, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy and other counties in Ireland! Thanks so much for the postcards. We love getting them and it is always fun to see whether the child or postcard wins the race back to crèche to tell us the holiday news. Other children are full of plans. Apparently we even have someone flying out to Kenmare!! We…

Dining at Crawford Childcare

Dining at Crawford Childcare The preschool years are important years to help the children form positive attitudes towards foods and good eating habits. Our Early Year Educators in Crawford Childcare help the children to develop good lifelong eating habits through being positive role models. Research has shown that children’s intake of fruit, vegetables and milk increases by observing adults eat these foods. Children are active participants in their dining experience at Crawford Childcare, Glanmire. Giving children a choice of food ensures that their likes and dislikes are respected. Encouraging children to serve themselves at meal times helps to make them feel competent and in control leading to the development…

Apples and Bananas

Apples and Bananas Our babies love the Barney song 'Apples and Bananas' which has  inspired healthy food tasting in the baby room recently which of course included apples and bananas but also other types of fruit and vegetables. We used two big bowls one for the fruit and the other for the vegetables for the babies to share. We washed and chopped up a variety of fruit and vegetables and placed them in separate bowls. It was a nice day so we set up the fruit and vegetables on our outdoor mat for the babies to sit around and share the fruit and vegetables picnic style. The babies…

Potato printing in our baby room at Crawford Childcare

Potato printing in our baby room at Crawford Childcare Recently we have been exploring potato stamping with the children in the baby room. This is a new experience for many of the children in this room. We decided to introduce this as some of our babies have shown a sensitivity to using their hands and feet directly. Although interested in the process of watching others doing this there are one or two who just haven’t liked the feel of the paint being directly on their hands and feet. As the babies seem interested in the activity we decided to give using different tools a try and so in came the potatoes!! The baby team…

What Crawford Childcare means to me: a student’s perspective

What Crawford Childcare means to me: a student’s perspective As part of my College Course Early Childhood Care and Education FETAC Level 5 I am completing 120 hours work experience here in Crawford Childcare, Glanmire. It was my whole life passion and fascination to work with children. Children show us a world that we may have forgotten how to imagine and it is a world full of wonder. Small experiences are major events to children. When raindrops fall on their hands they might tell you it feels tingling or they can look at a moving worm for a long time out of pure fascination. They trust you without any doubt. It is so important…

Pyjama Day 2015

Pyjama Day 2015 Pyjama Day is something that we love to do here at Crawford Childcare, Glanmire! We do this to help raise funds for worthy causes. This year at Crawford Childcare we held our National Pyjama Day on the 6th of March in aid of Irish Autism Action and it was a great success as together as we raised a whopping 553.01 euro. We would like to say a Big Thank You to everyone that helped support us on National Pyjama Day and that it was great to see so many people pull together and help support this fundraiser. Pyjama Day is a great day when all…

Say Hello to Oreo

Say Hello to Oreo Crawford Childcare adopted a fallabella horse in the latter half of 2013 and named him Oreo. He lives at Tir na Sí Open Farm in Watergrasshill where Julia and Paul McCarthy look after him on our behalf. Each morning and evening they feed Oreo and clean out his stable. We appreciate their work very much. On the farm Oreo's friends include pigs, sheep, horses and alpacas to mention but a few. Also the many parents and children that visit the farm stop by to chat to Oreo. He does love the attention he receives from everyone. Oreo is fifteen years old, this was confirmed by…

A Fairy visit to our Montessori

A Fairy visit to our Montessori There has been great excitement over the past few days in the Montessori room in Crawford Childcare, Glanmire, Co. Cork as we prepare for a fairy visit! We have done everything we can to ensure a pleasant stay. With the help of our Montessori “Super helpers” we found a nice quiet corner in our classroom to position our fairy door. Our talented “Cutters” and “Gluers” made a foam castle complete with fairy door. We even created our own fairy post box, where we can communicate with our new friend by leaving our letters, colourings and drawings. Laura and the Montessori class sat down together to…

10 tips for building a child’s well being

10 tips for building a child’s well being Here at Crawford Childcare, Glanmire we take a pro-active approach to supporting a child’s well-being through the curriculum. These 10 ideas used as daily habits will give your child the best chance possible to become a creative confident child. Be aware of your behaviour: You’re child will do as you do. Do you have minor tantrums when things go wrong? Can you stay calm during difficult situations? Be willing to say no: Children will naturally ask for things they can see. Saying “no” will give them an opportunity to deal with disappointment and to learn impulse control. Start coaching: Coaching your child will help them…
